COUNSELLING

Focus on What You Want to Change, Not Just What Has Gone Wrong

Counselling provides a supportive space to understand what you are experiencing, explore what you want to change and find a practical way forward.

At London Psychologist Centre, counselling is based on an evidence-based Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) approach. Rather than spending most of the therapy analysing problems or repeatedly revisiting the past, the focus is on understanding where you are now, identifying where you want to be and finding realistic steps to help you get there.

The approach recognises that people already have strengths, resources and experiences that can be used to create positive change. Therapy helps bring these resources into focus and turn them into practical solutions.

HOW SOLUTION-FOCUSED COUNSELLING WORKS

From Understanding the Problem to Building the Solution

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a goal-oriented approach that concentrates on what you want your life to look like when things improve.

Rather than asking only “Why is this happening?”, therapy explores questions such as:

What would you like to be different?
Clarifying what you actually want to change gives therapy a clear direction.
What would life look like if things were better?
Creating a detailed picture of your preferred future helps turn a general wish for change into something more concrete.
When has the problem felt more manageable?
Looking for moments when things worked better can reveal strengths, resources and strategies that already exist in your life.
What can you do differently?
Small, realistic changes can create momentum and gradually lead to larger improvements.

The focus is not on pretending that problems do not exist. Instead, it is about making sure that the problem does not become the entire focus of therapy.

By identifying what is already working and building on it, counselling can help you move from feeling stuck and overwhelmed towards having greater clarity, direction and control.

WHAT CAN SOLUTION-FOCUSED COUNSELLING HELP WITH?

Practical Support for Meaningful Change

Solution-focused counselling can be useful when you know that something needs to change but are unsure how to move forward.

It can support you with concerns such as:

  • Stress and feeling overwhelmed.
  • Anxiety and persistent worry.
  • Low confidence and self-belief.
  • Relationship difficulties.
  • Family and communication problems.
  • Life changes and difficult decisions.
  • Emotional difficulties.
  • Work-related challenges.
  • Motivation and feeling stuck.
  • Personal goals and changes you want to make.

The approach is particularly useful when you want therapy to be practical, focused and forward-looking. Your goals guide the sessions, while your existing strengths and resources become part of the process of creating change.

WHY SOLUTION-FOCUSED COUNSELLING?

A Brief, Goal-Focused Approach

Solution-focused therapy does not artificially limit the number of sessions. Instead, its focus on clear goals and practical change often means that therapy can remain focused and efficient.

The aim is to help you:

Recognise Your Strengths

Identify abilities, experiences and resources you may already have that can help you move forward.
Create Practical Change
Turn your goals into realistic steps that can be applied to your everyday life.
Build on Progress
Notice what is working and use those positive changes to create further progress.

At London Psychologist Centre, the approach is personalised to you rather than following a fixed formula. Your goals, circumstances and existing strengths help shape the direction of therapy.
